The EMG-GC21 SA pickup and pickguard set combines the attributes of the early Stratocasters sound but with an added midrange response and higher output, giving it "bell-like" ringing harmonics and increased sustain. One single Alnico bar magnet delivers classic overdrive with a smooth midrange distortion, while still retaining the familiar high-end of a single-coil pickup. These characteristics provide greater versatility than what is normally found in single-coil guitar pickups. When building or rebuilding an electric guitar you expect a certain amount of complications, there weren't as many as I expected with this kit. I decided to take the body of an old Fender strat (the pickups and hardware were shot due to water damage) and rebuild it with quality components. I had the tools to build a set like this but the pieces would have added up to almost the same as the prewired kit. The wiring job on this set is good quality with slide-on connections that eliminate the need for soldering, the directions included were detailed enough to follow without errors. There were more screw holes in this guard than my guitar body but a small drill bit for pilot holes fixed that problem. The cutout at the neck also didn't fit quite right so some minor clipping and sanding was required before installation. The cable for the battery is long enough to allow for a variety of mounting options. I chose to mount the battery under the back panel since I don't like restringing my guitar each time I change the battery. The first time I plugged my completed guitar in I got no sound but it was a connection issue at the line in and easily fixed. The sound you get out of these pickups is great. It's much richer and meatier than your typical strat while still maintaining a clean high end ring. Overall I'd give the quality of the components a 5 and the ease of install a 4.
