I've used Line 6 products for a few years. I've had the Spider Valve, PODxt Live, POD Farm, POD HD500, and now the DT25 112. I liked the Spider Valve okay, couldn't get the sounds I wanted out of the PODxt or POD Farm, and still own and use the HD500. The DT25 is far and away the best of these products so far, and the integration with the POD HD units is gravy.

First off, the DT25 is a great amp on its own, and you can use it without any other Line 6 products. It uses a standard foot switch (not included) to toggle amp channels and reverb, and you can set either channel up any way you like. Make them identical if you want, or make one slightly louder than the other -- or have a chimey class A clean sound on one channel and a beefy, ballsy modern high gain on the other. The amp uses HD modeling in the preamp section (the same HD models you can find in the POD HD line), but it has a full tube power section. The 112 version of the amp uses one 12AX7 and two EL84 tubes, and controls on the top of the amp let you configure how you want the power section to operate. You can switch between class A or class A/B, pentode or triode, as well as four separate "topologies," which are like voicings for the power amp. There is no modeling going on here: the switches configure the analog components to achieve the desired effect. You can choose among four classic voicings: I is a Fender clean sound; II is a British crunch; III is a Vox sound; and IV is a modern high-gain sound. Flipping through the different voicings automatically configures the other components to complement your choice, but you can manually set these to whatever you want. All these settings are stored per channel until you change them again. Otherwise, the amp controls are very straightforward: it's the same knobs everyone is familiar with.

Where this amp really shines is in pairing with the POD HD. There's an XLR input on the back labeled L6 LINK -- connect to the L6 LINK output on a POD HD with a standard microphone cable, and you can control every aspect of the amp with your POD. Depending on which model you select on the POD, the amp will configure itself with the proper topology, class, and operating mode. In effect, this bumps the four voicings up to the 20-something amp models available on the POD, plus it adds over 100 effects. You no longer have just two channels; you have as many as you want! Switching to different presets on the POD will automatically configure your DT25. It couldn't be simpler to use.

But most importantly, this is probably the best-sounding amp I've ever played. At 25 watts, it's plenty loud if you want it to be, and if you need to push more air you can add an extension cabinet (though the front-ported cabinet sounds surprisingly huge with a nice, tight bass response). There's also a low-volume switch on the back, which adds power amp modeling for simulated tube saturation at low volumes. Of course, the amp's natural tube saturation sounds much better if you can crank it up, while still leaving plenty of headroom for clean sounds. If all this isn't enough, there is a transformer-tapped, cabinet-simulated direct out for running a line straight to the board.

I play hard rock, metal, alternative, and some classic rock in my cover band, and the DT25/HD500 combo fits that bill perfectly. There isn't a single sound I need that I can't get with this setup, and they all sound amazing. I had been using the HD500 by itself direct to the board, and while that sounded good too, it took a lot of tweaking to make me happy. This setup is much more plug-and-play -- it's actually rather difficult to make this amp sound bad! -- and I get that "real amp" feel that I missed so much. I know it must seem like I'm gushing, but I can't help it! This amp is the real deal, on its own or with a POD HD, and I dare any guitarist to try one and not love it. Don't compare this amp to the Spider line, or even the Spider Valves. Those are for different players. The DT amps are as professional-grade as you'll find within $1000 of their price. I'd take this amp over one-trickers that cost three times as much. But I don't need to convince you -- all you need to do is play one!
